Chances are, if you have a young family, toys are going to be high on their priority list when it comes to moving house. Forget how to move your white goods, mattresses or more delicate items like mirrors and lamp shades – toys are where it’s at.
And yes, that probably goes for adults with toys too (all that adult LEGO is going to be a challenge to move without breaking apart…).
So, how do you go about packing all your kids’ (and your) toys and ensure they get safely to your new home? Here’s a quick step-by-step guide – read on for more detail below:
- Have a declutter and donate unwanted toys to charity
- Sort the toys into sizes
- Pack similar sized toys together
- Pad the box for protection
- Seal and label each box
Equipment & supplies you need to pack toys for moving house
Before you set about packing up your family’s toys, there are a few things you’ll need to have to hand to make sure the process goes smoothly:
- Sturdy moving boxes – to transport your toys safely
- Packaging material like paper or packing peanuts – to protect your more delicate toys and pad out your boxes so the toys aren’t jumbled around
- Packing tape – to seal your boxes securely
- A good marker pen – for labelling your box so you know where to put it in your new home
A step-by-step guide to packing toys for a house move
Once you have all the supplies you need to pack up your toys, here’s what you need to:
1. Donate unwanted toys to charity
Before you start packing, it’s a good idea to have a declutter and take any old or unwanted toys to the local charity shop. That way, other children can benefit from them and you don’t have as many toys to pack.
2. Sort the toys into sizes
Packing toys of a similar size together is the easiest way to move them. The other thing you can do is ensure that any delicate toys are more carefully wrapped, so put these to one side.
Pro-tip #1: Got LEGO that’s built into a full set? Wrap it in industrial strength cling film to prevent it breaking apart in transit (and remember…if it does break, it can be rebuilt!).
3. Pack similar sized toys together
Seal the bottom of your cardboard moving boxes securely, and place the similar-sized toys together. Wrap the more delicate or fragile toys in bubble wrap so they don’t get damaged or break in transit. Pack them together.
If you have a lot of stuffed toys, put them in a bin liner and tie it tightly before you put the bag in a box as this will protect the toys from moisture – and therefore mould.
3. Pad the box for protection
Fill any space left in each box with packaging material to protect the toys and prevent them from bumping around. You can use old newspapers for this job, or filler paper or packaging peanuts (just make sure they’re the eco-friendly type).
4. Seal and label each box
Seal each box securely and label them with the room that the toys will be going into in your new home.
Pro-tip #2: don’t pack all your children’s toys. Get them to choose a few that they want to keep with them during the move to keep them entertained.
